Course content

The course will address subject didactic topics, representations and approaches related to global conditions, international issues and sustainable development. The course aims to discuss how global awareness and education for sustainable development can be legitimized and developed in the social sciences. In the light of learning and teaching perspectives, global actors and power structures, geopolitical conditions, war and conflict, cooperation and development, globalization, distribution and inequality, climate, consumption and resources will be addressed.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate

  • has advanced knowledge about education for sustainable development and social science didactics, especially related to relationships between social, economic and environmental conditions.
  • has in-depth knowledge of national and international conflicts and conflict resolution in light of politics and international law.
  • has relevant knowledge of how humanity's way of life and use of resources have consequences locally, nationally and globally, and how learning about the topic can be developed.
  • has relevant knowledge of key actors and concepts related to international politics and global conditions and how these concepts can be applied and discussed in learning processes.
  • Has advanced knowledge of globalization and different dimensions of global inequality and research related to global learning

Skills

The candidate

  • can apply and problematize concepts such as globalization, development and sustainability
  • can discuss and communicate the causes and consequences of global inequality
  • is able to assess and portray the role of international intitutions and multinational companies, and discuss how these represent power structures globally and nationally.
  • can teach about conflicts and conflict resolution using social science didactic theories.

General competence

The candidate

  • can contribute to innovation and initiate development and change processes related to education for sustainable development
  • can develop didactical research questions related to internationalization and globalization
  • can analyze and critically examine various sources of knowledge within global issues, climate change and sustainable development.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminars, group work and use of digital tools

Compulsory work

Oral presentation and one written assignment. Attendance is required to carry out mandatory activities. Compulsory work must be must be approved in order to be able to sit for the exam.
