Course content

The module introduces students to a perspective on grammar that is anticipated to support effective teaching and learning of form in language. The module will familiarize students with key aspects of grammar and help them see the connection between underlying structures and languages in use. Common problems that arise when learners use grammatical structures in communication will be identified, while ways of teaching that will help learners achieve more precise use of grammatical structures in relevant contexts will be reviewed.

  • advanced knowledge of commonly taught aspects of grammar, various theoretical perspectives on grammar teaching, and school curriculum content
  • in-depth knowledge about how to teach a specific grammatical structure in specific classroom situations

The student can

  • identify and analyze common learner problems with grammar and comprehend the factors underlying them
  • critically reflect upon his/her own experience of grammar learning and teaching

General competence

The student can

  • analyze and take a position on ethical dilemmas and issues in subject or professional didactics
  • apply their knowledge and skills to develop grammatical competence in carrying out an independent project work

Learning methods and activities

The course will include lectures, discussions, group work, and presentations.

Required previous knowledge

30 course credits in the subject language (English, French, Spanish, or German). The prerequisite must be completed at the start of the course.
