Course content

The module gives students insight into the language development in bi- and multilinguals from both theoretical and applied perspectives. It introduces the notions of communicative and performative competence and examines approaches to language teaching in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. It also examines the role of intercultural competence and pragmatics in language teaching.

  • has advanced knowledge of monolingual and multilingual approaches in the study of language acquisition

  • is able to apply appropriate, varied approaches to language teaching in linguistically and culturally diverse contexts
  • can independently support the development of intercultural competence and pragmatic competence in language teaching

  • can analyze relevant academic and research issues about language learning and development of language competence
  • is able to apply their knowledge and skills related to language learning and the development of language competence in carrying out an independent project work

Lecture, discussion and groupwork, presentations.

Required previous knowledge

30 credits in a foreign language (English, French, Spanish, or German). The prerequisite must be met prior to enrolment in the course.

A list of required course readings will be provided before the beginning of the semester. Articles will be uploaded on the NTNU online learning platform prior to class.
