Course content

This course develops knowledge and competence within a variety of practices, theories, and research methodologies in arts education, particularly connected to socially sustainable art practices, improvisation, performativity, and critical thinking. The course seeks to expand the understanding of the dynamics between views on learning, teaching, sustainability, arts and knowledge, and arts educational practices. The student develops competence in critically engaging in learning and teaching, different arts and educational practices, and research in a societal context. A wide variety of artistic expressions and educational approaches are used to explore how educators can create space to difference, community, equity, and diversity. The aim is to qualify the student to explore, use, and think critically about values and approaches in many different arts and educational practices. The student will develop skills in academic and artistic dissemination through digital platforms.

The examination for this course consists of two components:

  • Oral exam- A presentation connected to practical arts educational work, counts 40/100
  • Assignment- A theory-infused digital exposition, count 60/100

The assessment scale will be through the letter grade scale A-F, where the grades A-E means pass and F means failed. A is the highest and E is the lowest grade. Both components must be passed in order to pass the course. If one part is failed, only this part must be taken again in order to pass the course. If a student wishes to improve the assessment result, it is possible to take up only one of the parts again.

The teaching materials required for this course:

  • - This course description, and a course plan which the course teacher will share.
  • - Course reader including current global theories associated with arts education research with literature choices in English and Nordic languages. There will be compulsory reading a well as different reading choices, but the readings list will be advised by and must be approved by the course coordinator. A preliminary reading list will be posted on the digital learning platform prior to the start of the course.
  • - Different arts materials as required and as available at Department of Teacher Education (ILU), NTNU. ILU will not cover the costs of other materials.
