About the course

Course content

The students define, collect and organise a material. This will occur through a search for literature, fieldwork, and a work period at (or a study of) a dance institution. They select a reading material which can supply theory and methods for discussions of their source material and write a report on their project.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

An examinee with completed qualification in DANS3004

  • has good knowledge about theoretical and methodological approaches to develop and reply to questions in the field of dance studies.
  • has knowledge about a methodological basis for conducting dance research, fieldwork and source criticism.

Skills:

An examinee with completed qualification in DANS3004

  • has good skills for structuring, organising and analysing a selected material of dances through systematic source criticism and search for literature
  • has good skills for analysing, critically evaluating and using available material in the field
  • has skills for building a project based on empirical approach to a material using relevant theory and methodology

General competence:

An examinee with completed qualification in DANS3004

  • is able to work independently with a chosen academic problem - is able to connect theory and methodology in setting up an academic project

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and/or supervision in groups. Plan for the project with reading list must be delivered and approved by 1 September (autumn) and 1 February (spring).

Compulsory assignments

  • Approved plan for the project with reading list required

Further on evaluation

Lenght of essay: 15-20 pages (including literature list), use 1,5 space, times new roman.

If the candidate retakes the exam, there is no need to retake the compulsory assignments.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Dance Knowledge, Practice and Heritage (MACHOREO)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to Nordic Master in Dance Studies (No-Ma-DS) or Erasmus Mundus Master in Dance Knowledge, Practice and Heritage (Choreomundus).
