Course content

The course is conducted in conjunction with a project work that integrates the following main themes: Renovation of buildings. Environmental Technology. Material Technology.

Renovation of buildings: Planning process and design criteria for retrofitting. Condition analysis. Previous vs. new technical requirements. Optimization of building envelope parameters regarding energy efficiency and environmental impact. Integrated design. Climate changes. Climate adaptation;

Environmental Technology: Life cycle analysis (LCC and LCA). Greenhouse gas accounts. Environmental certification and classification of buildings. Reuse;

Material Technology: Sustainability. Material and components. Aging process. Innovation. Product documentation;

Legislation: Understanding of technical and administrative requirements within the field;

Digital string: Digital skills in DAK software, skills in digital processing of DAK files, digital collaboration skills.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

  • The candidate has knowledge of the legislation and the administrative and technical requirements for buildings in the Planning and Building Act and the relevant regulations in the field.
  • The candidate has knowledge of environmental objectives from a professional point of view.
  • The candidate is familiar with research and development work within the subject focusing on national and international standards.
  • The candidate has knowledge of professional relevant software such as DAK / BIM and has digital competence in the field.

Skills

  • The candidate can work in digital laboratories with digital modeling and calculation tools in the field of specialization.
  • The candidate can apply knowledge and relevant results from research and development work to solve technical and practical issues within the field of study and justify his / her choices.
  • The candidate can find, evaluate, use and refer to information and subject matter and make it so that it highlights a problem within the subject field.
  • The candidate can update his / her knowledge in the field through information retrieval focusing on building research online.

General competence

  • The candidate has insight into the environmental, health and societal consequences of products and solutions within the field of study and can put these in an ethical perspective and a lifelong perspective.
  • The candidate can reflect on his / her own professional practice in ethical matters, including in group and interdisciplinary context.
  • The candidate has insight into Norwegian legislation and national and international standards.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises, seminars and project-based learning.

Mandatory activities Project work in groups. Exercises. Seminar and gathering participation. Mandatory activities must be approved in order for the student to be able to evaluate the project and to register for the exam.

Further on evaluation

Written exam which counts 60% and project work counts 40%. Compulsory activity before the exam: 4 of 5 exercises must be approved and 3 group presentations of project work.

In case of postponed examination (continuation examination), written examination may be changed to oral examination.

A re-sit examination is held in May/June. Continuation and voluntary repetition / improvement can be carried out for some sub-evaluations without having to reassess both sub-evaluations in a topic. There is an opportunity to complain about partial assessments in this topic before all sub-evaluations have been completed.
