Course content
Basic Principles for the construction and design of roads and streets. Subsurface investigations. Materials used in road pavements. Laboratory tests. Application of road standards N200 Road Construction. The Norwegian Method of pavement design. Compaction. Road rehabilitation. Drainage. Road maintenance and operations. Geometric design of roads and streets. Background and application of road standards N100 Road and street design. Horizontal and vertical alignment. Cross-section design. Earthworks quantities.
Historical development of the railways (history of railway technology, the role of the railway in the transport system, actors and organization in the rail sector). General about the main elements of the railway system. Rail and transport economy. Route design and track geometry. Brief introduction of railway construction. Technical regulations and practical use. Rail and its impact on the external environment.
Learning outcome
KNOWLEDGE
- The candidate shall be familiar with the background of the provisions of the N100 and N200 Standards, and have basic knowledge of the principle of geometric design and technical construction of roads and streets.
- The candidate shall have basic knowledge of road rehabilitation, road maintenance and operations.
- The candidate will be familiar with the construction of digital road and terrain models, and the application of this in a computer assisted road planning system.
- The student shall have general knowledge about the historic development of railways, the main components of railways: Track, Electrification, Signaling and Telecommunication, railway planning and guidelines and rules for planning, design, construction and operation of railways.
SKILLS
Highway Construction:
- The candidate should be able to dimension and construct roads and streets in accordance with current requirements for materials, alignment, environment and aesthetics.
- The candidate should be able to understand/make plans and profiles.
- The candidate shall decide on geometric parameters for the railway, choose relevant superstructure elements, and calculate stress distribution through the railway structure.
GENERAL COMPETENCE
- The candidate shall have good skills in the use of professional sources, professional methods, applicable laws and regulations, as well as standards for planning, engineering, surveying, construction, management, operation, maintenance.

Compulsory requirementes both in group and individually. In case of a re-sit exam the written exam might be changed to an oral exam.
