About

About the course

Course content

The topic and research question for the master's thesis should be relevant to technology management and digital transformation as a subject area. Together with the specialisation, the master's thesis constitutes the programme's specialisation. The topic of the thesis and the theory used must therefore be linked to the subject area covered by the specialization. It is considered an advantage that students work with real issues related to their own business. The topic/research question is chosen by the student in consultation with the supervisor. The master's thesis is standardised to about 800 working hours.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The students - has in-depth, research-based knowledge within a limited field of study.

The students - can carry out an independent research or development project using relevant theories and methods, and in accordance with ethical norms for research.

General Competence:

The students - can link research-based knowledge to their own organizational experience in a way that demonstrates the ability for independent analytical reflection.

Learning methods and activities

Early in the semester, a project plan must be established that must be approved by the supervisor. The master's thesis can be written individually or in groups of up to three members. If a group thesis is written, the individual's contribution must correspond to an individual master's thesis with regard to work effort and scope. The student is assigned a supervisor from the academic environment responsible for the specialisation chosen by the student. In cases where there are several departments involved in the specialization, the topic of the thesis, as described in the application, will determine which department is responsible for supervising the student. Consideration may also be given to assigning a supervisor from another department and/or an external co-supervisor if the topic of the thesis so warrants.

In cases where an external co-supervisor is appointed, it is nevertheless the department at NTNU that has the overall academic responsibility. The master's thesis must be submitted within one calendar year after start-up. The agreement with NTNU can be extended once, by one semester, without justification or documentation.

Students are entitled to up to 30 hours of supervision limited to two semesters. The number of hours includes both direct conference / supervision with the student and pre- and post-work for the supervisor. A separate agreement must be entered into and signed by the student, supervisor and department. The course is part of NTNU's further education programme, and has a course fee. See NTNU Videre's website https://www.ntnu.no/videre

In the case of a group thesis, the group chooses individual or joint assessment of the master's thesis. At the start of the work on the master's thesis, a written agreement must be entered into between the department, supervisor and student. Students who are going to write a group assignment must also enter into a written agreement about this. A separate agreement form is used.

The master's thesis must be submitted in NTNU's exam system Inspera Assessment.

Compulsory activities from previous semester can be approved by the department.
