Course content

The thesis must satisfy requirements for relevance and is expected to provide new knowledge which is oriented towards specific goals or applications. The student shall follow the guidelines given in the document "Guidance for Master's thesis" and information given on the NTNU intranet/LMS for the process/course.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrate significant insight into relevant and updated research literature and theories for the presented research question
  • Demonstrate understanding and proficiency in relevant research methods

Skills:

  • Within a scientific problem, know how to formulate research questions, find and use relevant literature, set up and follow an appropriate research design to collect data, analyze and draw conclusions based upon the research process.

General competence:

  • Under supervision know how to plan and implement an independent research project in line with accepted research ethical norms
  • Through the work on the master thesis develop ability to critically reflect on own and others work, including ability to assess theoretical and practical implications of a variety of research- and project work. The independent work must show understanding, reflection and maturation.

Learning methods and activities

The master's thesis must be an independent work under supervision. Assignment of a supervisor takes place after submission of a project sketch, normally in the autumn semester. The master's thesis is written together with a fellow student (2 students together), or alone. Supervision is given for one semester; the spring semester when the master's thesis work is completed. It is mandatory to attend seminars on campus during the spring semester. If professional and supervisory considerations so require, the master's thesis should be written in English. Alternatively, it can be written in Norwegian.

Further on evaluation

The submission deadline is normally in May. Date is stated by 1 October. If there are special reasons (eg illness), students can apply for a postponement until 31 August of the same year, but no supervision is will be given beyond the original submission deadline.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Accounting and Auditing (MRR)

Required previous knowledge

Exams in mandatory MRR courses with code BMRRxxxx must be passed by the registration deadline 1 February. Students can apply for a dispensation from the prerequisite requirement if they lack up to 7.5 credits to fulfill the requirement. The application must be substantiated.
