Course content

The course aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the organizational and management issues related to management of public organizations. Emphasis will be placed on the students acquiring insight into and understanding of relevant aspects regarding the subject of organization and management. - Organizational understandings and governance perspectives

- Demands for reform, renewal and innovation in the public sector

- Institutions as tools for behavior management

- Intra- and inter-organizational relationships as seen from a management perspective, as well as cross-sectoral development

- Different approaches to analysis of organizations and managerial issues

- Organizational change and change management

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has advanced knowledge of central organizational and managerial perspectives on organization and management
  • has in-depth knowledge of central matters of public governance
  • can apply academic knowledge in new areas within the field of organization and management and explain his/her choice

Skills

The candidate:

  • can analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations in the field and work independently on practical and theoretical problems
  • can reflect on and apply the subject's central theories and perspectives
  • can carry out an independent, limited research under supervision and in accordance with applicable norms for research ethics

General knowledge

The candidate:

  • can update his/her knowledge in the subject by actively seeking sources for this
  • can work independently with defined tasks such as gathering subject matter, processing it and preparing a written or oral presentation
  • can apply his/her knowledge and skills in new areas in order to carry out advanced assignments and projects

Learning methods and activities

Teaching will be problem-oriented, and emphasis will be placed on drawing specific examples. In addition to lectures, case discussions and group work will be used. The lectures will be coordinated with the other core subjects, so that some of the lecture-weeks has an explicit character of integration.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: In order to be admitted to the exam, the student must have been approved for a memorandum (about 10 pages) written in groups of two or three persons.

ASSESSMENTS: Project assignment.

Paper should be an independent treatment of a topic from the lectures and should have a length of 15 to 20 pages.

NEW/DELAYED EXAM: According to current laws, rules, and regulations.The postponed exam may have a different assessment scheme than the regular exam.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: To qualify for evaluation, 70% attendance is required in the course. The course is only available for students at the study program Master of Public Administration
