Course content

This is an "Executive management programme" with practice as a mentor for course participants in the subject BA6280. The subject provides an in-depth understanding of how the VDC framework can be implemented in practice in various situations.

Academic guidance includes the five elements of the VDC framework:

• Joint engineering (Integrated Concurrent Engineering ICE)

• Building Information Modeling (BIM)

• Process and production management (PPM)

• Metrics

• Goal achievement (Project goals + Customer goals)

Competence development is practically oriented and based on the learning circle of continuous development from report to report, and collection to collection.

Theory and practice from this subject give you comprehensive competence to further develop and implement Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) in your own projects.

Learning outcome

After the course, the participant should be able to analyze the five elements included in the VDC framework: Co-projecting (Integrated Concurrent Engineering ICE), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Process and Production Management (PPM), Metrics and Goal Attainment (Project Goals + Customer Goals), and the connection between these applied in specific situations in own projects.

The participant must be able to contribute to the implementation of routines and the use of templates and digital solutions to standardize the use of the VDC framework. This includes the use of digital solutions, with particular emphasis on BIM-based solutions for:

• Visualization of data and geometry in designed and built solutions and development status

• Integration of data from various sources for dashboards and decision support

• Automation of digital work tasks

This is abbreviated VIA and contributes to an increased degree of data-driven project implementation

The participant must be able to function in the role of manager and supervisor for other project participants and managers by being able to analyze and assess how they use the VDC framework in their projects. This includes an analysis of group dynamics.

The participant must be able to develop and assess the usefulness of implementation plans in their own projects, ref. Learning circle for continuous competence development and identification of root causes.

The participant must have competence to analyze and assess measures and effects of various elements and the connection between these in the VDC framework

The participant must have the competence to organize, implement and assess VDC courses and other competence measures in their own projects.

Learning methods and activities

Seminar-based competence program that runs over three semesters #1). Training begins the semester before teaching in BA6280. This consists of workshops with physical participation, online gatherings, course gatherings and study tours. You are involved in the planning of BA6280 and follow this entire subject together with the participants you supervise. You lead group work and can also contribute to joint teaching with your own examples of using VDC. During the completion of BA6280, you follow up approx. 10 participants, and evaluate 7 submitted reports. There you provide an assessment of the level of competence achieved and concrete feedback on areas for improvement, both in writing and in an online meeting with the student. You form part of a team together with another mentor and someone who has been a mentor in the past. Insights from VDC implementation from approx. 25 different projects.

The basis of experience is in-depth knowledge from the follow-up of approx. 10 participants/projects with primary responsibility, and 15 others who form part of the supervisor team, as well as the collaboration with the other two mentors. You attend mentoring meetings after each report submission to receive feedback, competence development and professional themes for upcoming activities. The course ends with a one-week study trip to Stanford University.

For continuous competence development after finishing this education program, you will be part of the mentoring team of the organization VDC Norway.

Further on evaluation

The exam is a report. The report is worked on throughout the subject. A final report is submitted in which you reflect on your own competence development, your role as manager/supervisor and how you will apply this competence in your own projects.

Required previous knowledge

Passed BA6280 VDC certification or equivalent

General study skills. For those who wish to go further and take an experience-based master's degree, the admission requirement for the master's degree program is that you have a bachelor's degree in technological subjects and two years of relevant professional experience.
