Course content
The course concentrates on the development of individual artistic practice and the contextualisation of the studio work. It covers the advanced phases of research and concept development of an MFA thesis project. The course introduces forms of writing in the form of a critical reflection,that aims to provide knowledge and insight into the studio work. This course prepares MFA candidates for practice-based research in contemporary art. It aims to help MFA candidates develop the final presentation and dissemination phases of their thesis project, focussing on concept, development of individual style, aesthetic considerations, and spatial realization of the studio work. Aspects of the exhibition, such as choice of site, exhibition display and curatorial design are discussed and planned in group meetings.
Learning outcome
The objective is to focus and develop the MFA thesis project which is to be presented and defended in the MFA exhibition and exam at the end of the two-year term. On completion of this course, students will be able to: - Develop a clear proposal for realisation and presentation of the final thesis work - assess and present their own practice in relation to a wider context of contemporary and/or historical art practices - demonstrate relevant approaches and methods for the advanced phase with their artistic research - identify relevant theoretical, philosophical, cultural and political issues related to proposed thesis work - demonstrate skills and competence required to produce final thesis work - communicate their project orally within group discussions and in written form
Learning methods and activities
The course covers a range of pedagogical formats and activities:
- Participation in module/seminar 4: thesis writing
- Participation in module/seminar 5: exhibiting strategies
- Attendance of MFA graduation exhibition meetings
- Participation in a presentational format to showcase artistic work
- Group critique in the form of meetings with fellow students and supervisors
- Individual tutorials / guidance meetings with the main supervisor and the co-supervisor
- Individual studio work: further development of an individual artistic project throughout the semester. A presentation of work and processes and/or documentation thereof, are assessed at the end of the semester - in a progress review.

The individual progression is examined in a progress review at the end of the term. The progress review must be successfully passed in BK3306 Advanced Artistic Work 3, to be considered eligible to enter the final semester and submit an MFA thesis.

- Progress Review: Assessment of overall artistic development according to learning outcome in the shape of an interview.
- Written Summary: 6000-8000 characters including spaces, that sums up activities of the term, putting into perspective how the thesis work will be approached and outlining a principal concept for the critical reflection, including a technical rider, including spatial considerations, medium and technical requirements.
- Documentation: Sufficient visual, audiovisual or other documentation of activities, process and results.
- The text and documentation should be delivered as compatible digital file formats or as a personal page in the Research Catalogue. All materials must be submitted in Inspera.
- Postponed or new exams will be held in the next exam period.
- participation in learning activities such as supervision, group critiques and course specific seminars and projects is mandatory.
