BA8616 - Geometric Design of Highways

About

Lessons are not given in the academic year 2024/2025

Course content

The course is given every second year, next time in fall semester 2025. The course will focus on relations which influence the performance of highways; highway standards and spesifications, design criteria, alignment, cross section, safety and traffic flow.

Learning outcome

The goal of the course is to give the students knowledge about basic road design theory and how it is applied in Norway. In addition, the students in the course then develop further knowledge and understanding of different factors which influence the design and operations of roads.

Learning methods and activities

The course consists of a series of lectures with obligatory exercises related to the lectures. Additionally, the course includes an obligatory research project with a written report and presentation/oral exam. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.

Compulsory assignments

  • Exercise

Further on evaluation

Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a term paper (50%) and an oral exam, which includes a presentation of the term paper. The oral exam counts 50%. The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned Passed/Not passed. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Engineering (PHIV)

Required previous knowledge
