Course content
This is a special course for PhD candidates at the OCTAS project.
1. The surface of the sea: geometry, topography, spatial and temporal variations
2. The Earth's gravity field and the Geoid
3. Determination of the geoid based on gravity measurements
4. Determination of the geometry of the sea surface by satellite altimetry
5. Determination of the topography of the sea surface from oceanographic measurements
6. Ocean circulation models for climate studies
Learning outcome
Learning objective:
After completing the course the candidate shall have an in-depth understanding of ocean circulation models and their impacts on ocean climate.
Knowledge:
After completing the course, the candidate shall have knowledge about operational oceanography with the impact on climate change, knowledge of methods and techniques for determination of Ocean parameters using different satellite missions, Knowledge of geodetic satellites applications in for example Oceanography, and climate system.
Skills:
After completing the course, the candidate shall be able to perform mean sea surface, geoid and mean dynamic topography computations, be able to calculate other ocean parameters from satellite data like sea level anomaly, ocean mass change and steric sea level, including analysis of the results, be able to use the calculated ocean parameters within other disciplines like Oceanography and Climate studies.
General competence:
After completing the course the candidate shall have obtained ability to work independently and in a team towards relevant research front in ocean climate and operational oceanography, ability to identify the gravimetry and altimetry satellite data interface and relation with other related disciplines, ability to understand the international perspective of ocean satellite monitoring and be able to cooperate internationally.
