Examination arrangement

Course content

Preferably, students should choose projects from a portfolio presented by local businesses and academic staff. If project ideas from regional companies require cooperation on the business location, campus students or part-time students living in the region will have priority. Additionally, students may present their own project ideas in cooperation with external partners for acceptance. The projects must have the course portfolio from the student's study program as a starting point.

Learning outcome

The Bachelor's Dissertation completes the student's program of studies and integrates important components from the course portfolio.

At the end of the course period, the student has:

• about theory on a chosen area from the course portfolio
• about scientific methods
• about the state of the art in their chosen field.

Skills

• Develop and plan how to carry out the work related to a significant research & development problem
• Analytically reflect on their own empirical data, consider possible solutions, and bring forward a chosen solution to the problem.
• Identify and evaluate relevant literature that is needed to solve the case
• Ability to carry out, document, and communicate the results from the project work according to an academic standard

General competence:

• Have insight into ethical challenges that are relevant to the chosen problem
• Have an awareness of how the research question and the project work may have an impact on the businesses and their surroundings from a sustainability perspective.

Learning methods and activities

There are no ordinary lectures in this course, but there will be short seminars to give information and generic support to the project process. Campus students will cooperate in groups of 3 participants.

Part- time students are recommended to work in groups of 2 or 3 participants, but individual work can be accepted according to the student's application. Each group is offered up to 7 hours of tutoring during the project period and additional feedback on one draft.

Additionally:

An oral presentation is a part of the assessment in the course. As compulsory work, campus students have to be present during all oral presentations for business administration and logistics management students. Part-time students may choose to present their thesis online or come to campus for their presentation

About the assessment:

Written report with abstract in Norwegian and English. The report must be signed by all group members and uploaded before the deadline to be evaluated. Additionally, an oral presentation of the project is required. From this, the examiners may calibrate the preliminary grade on the written project +/- one grade and the official grade is decided. Anyhow, the student must pass a written report (better than F) to meet for an oral presentation.

Two examiners evaluate each project, and at least one is an external examiner. At the start of the semester, more guidelines about the course are presented on Blackboard.

About continuation:

If the bachelor course is not passed, the student/s may perform an improved dissertation by the end of the next semester as a re-sit. In this case, 5 hours of tutoring is offered. Later, the student/s must carry out a new project according to ordinary rules in the course description at the time of re-sit.

Specific conditions

Required previous knowledge

The students must have earned 105 ECTS before Sept.01. in the fall semester when the bachelor work starts. For campus students these ECTS must be earned during semesters 1-4, and include passed exams in REA1153/F Mathematics for economists (7,5 ECTS), REA1154/F Statistics for economists (7,5 ECTS) and SMF2292/F Quantitative and Qualitative Methods (7,5 ECTS). For part-time students the ECTS must be earned during semester 1-6, and include the same passed courses as mentioned above.
