Course content
Knowledge about geographical information systems (GIS) as important methods for physical planning. Introduction and training with ArcGis and eventually with other GIS applications.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: The functionality and operation of geographic information systems (GIS). Basic geographical data and reference systems, cartography and cartographic methods, relevant to the needs and scope of physical planning. Data structures, data models and geographic / spatial analysis techniques that are used for examination and presentation of the plan base, plan presentation and impact analysis. Norwegian data sources and their use in analysis and planning.
Skills: Facilitation of geographical data in a GIS, preparation for analysis or design purposes. Basic design and editing work using GIS tools. The use of 2D and 3D for presentation of plan base and results in an easily understandable manner. Use of GIS functions for plan-oriented analysis of localization or consequences of plan implementation. Such analysis may include terrain, landscape and natural conditions, and / or transportation, land use, demographics or other specific man-made factors.
General competence: to make use of acquired knowledge and skills solving a variety of tasks related to geographic analysis and physical planning.

Required previous knowledge
Minimum Bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
Due to capacity limitation only 35 students can be accepted. Students who take Masters degree in Physical Planning will be given priority. Remaining places can be given to other students.

Textbook will be announced before term, in addition an excercise compendium will be distributed.
