Course content

The subject is based on the subject area of property development and Facilities Management, and studies the concept of sustainability and the use of enabling technologies that can constitute a radical change. This also includes the use of digital tools to reduce resource and land use, and take social and human needs into account. The subject provides an introduction to the use of various methods, tools and technologies for assessing projects in a life-cycle perspective where sustainability and consequences for the environment and surroundings are central. Important elements in the subject will be what is included in the concept of sustainability, which factors influence sustainable property development and facilites management, and strategies and enabling technologies for how this can be handled for a business or in a project. The subject will focus on current issues within property development and facilities management, which may differ from year to year.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - the candidate

  • has in-depth knowledge of the concept of sustainability, and which factors influence sustainable property development and management, and strategies for how this can be handled for a business or in a project.
  • has good knowledge of various tools and methods for analyzes related to sustainability, including social and demographic aspects
  • has good knowledge of analysis methods such as annual costs (LCC), life cycle analyses (LCA) and how the methods can contribute to a more circular economy
  • has good knowledge of various enabling technologies within the area of PropTech

Skills - the candidate

  • has tried out some of the enabling technologies, tools and methods in practice in the project tasks in the subject
  • can carry out independent assessments and analyses of businesses and projects, and identify factors that are important for sustainable development and management
  • can use relevant theory and empirical evidence to discuss important issues related to sustainable property development and management, and make recommendations on improvements to the situation in relation to a sustainability perspective.
  • can carry out an independent, limited project work/case study under guidance and in line with good practice.

General competence - the candidate

  • have a good understanding of how enabling technologies can contribute to more sustainable projects to reduce resource use and taking care of human and social needs.
  • can communicate results from projects both in writing and orally in a structured and clear way both to experts and to the general public
  • can use relevant technical terms and technical expressions related to sustainable facilities management in a professional and scientific way.
  • has a well-developed understanding of professional and ethical integrity and critical reflection related to the topic

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars are based on relevant national and international literature on sustainable property development and management as well as enabling technologies. Case studies are planned where real projects and issues are analyzed in collaboration with relevant actors. Knowledge of and use of enabling technologies is emphasized. In addition, various activities are included in class situations where students work together on specific issues and questions. This is followed up through presentation and discussion and is part of short exercises and workshops.

Further on evaluation

Assignment 1: Group assignment to be delivered mid-term. The group assignment is based on a relevant case or issue related to a topic that the group wishes to study in more detail. The grade is shared by the group, so that all members are expected to work together on the task. This grade weighs 60% of the total grade. Assignment 2: Individual in-depth assignment based on the group assignment. The assignment is delivered at the end of the semester. The grade is individual for the student's work and weighs 40% of the total grade. Both assignments must be passed for the subject as a whole to be passed. Postponed exams are normally added to the next exam period.
