Course content

The course investigates the field where architecture cross-pollinates with other creative disciplines. The objective are to challenge the participants to develop a platform to define their own forms of practice. Architecture is about more than just drawing houses and this course will offer the opportunity to expand skills beyond the conventional notion of what architecture can contribute to society. They will develop strategies and methods to better be able to navigate complexity and in finding new solutions to the challenges we face in an unknown future
The course offers challenging assignments in the span from generating conceptual ideas to site-specific interventions. The goal is to achieve real impact by actively contributing to society and the urban development by making live interventions, with stakeholders and public engagement
“Doing” as a source of new knowledge is the common denominator, litteraly “Making is Thinking.”

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE:
The course is based on AAR4909 Aesthetics, theory and practice in architecture and emphasizes how this knowledge can be used and translated into architectural solutions. The knowledge is articulated through reflection by discussions and in logs. Through this kind of effort we aim for an awareness and knowledge of their own learning process. Essentially, the participants are able to develop professional knowledge based on creative practices, as well as the theories and methods that the course introduces, aiming at breaking loose of their own frames of understanding. Central to the course is the focus on lateral thinking, an approach to learning and developing creative processes which require that students let go of past performances or preconceptions ("einstellung effect" or "design fixation") and overcome learning thresholds.
SKILLS:
Develop and use experimental planning methodologies in the overlap between architecture and artistic processes. They will engage in analogue materials, as well as mixed media, as a foundation for idea generation and communication They will achieve training to practice different techniques, tools and materials. What kind of techniques, tools and materials will vary, depending on the theme. Ex. Welding, printing techniques. They will strengthen the ability to develop architectural briefs and to continuously express ideas through architectural form and space. The participants will increase the ability to experiment towards radical solutions by challenging prevailing design habits and design preconceptions in order to reveal new possibilities. They will make creative use of, and appreciate the unusual, the strange and the unexpected

GENERAL COMPETENCE:
The goal is for the participants to increase flexibility and to develop strategies for navigating complexity. We will challenge the participants to develop a critical perspective and engage in experimental design activities, societal questions and public events. They will gain a competence in initiating and implementing actions and physical interventions that involve real stakeholders and the population, and through this achieve to be a relevant contributor in society and the urban development.
It is expected that the participants will achieve a high level of understanding and reflection and will further develop as a professionals on an independent basis

Learning methods and activities

Through a series of lectures, workshops, seminars as well as group and individual tutorials, this course aims to contextualize and understand the art and architecture overlap. We will re-engage analogue materials and observation as a foundation for idea generation and explore a range of mixed media from idea development to presentation. We will in regard to this offer different workshop training. Furthermore we emphasis on cooperating with external actors from the arts and culture field in addition to the municipality and / or other stakeholders. In addition to the teaching and tutorials, we encourage the use of alternative sources of information and inspiration through film, literature, exhibitions, performances, music and cultural actions. Experimentations will be encouraged and mistakes will be allowed. This is essential for all forms of creative work. The outcome will be exhibited at the end of the semester, on site, open for the public.
