Course content

Through systematic field investigation the student will get to know the building’s distinctiveness and characteristics. Project design based on field investigation, literature studies and discussions on the topic.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: Basic knowledge in field investigation of existing buildings, and in the assessment of the building’s limits and possibilities. A basic understanding of how to arrange content in practice. The student should also have basic knowledge og project design for improving existing buildings. Skills: The student should be able to measure a building with analog tools as well as reflect on the accuracy and tolerance of the methods. Basic knowledge of digital methods and the understanding of when they can be useful. The student should also have basic skills in transformative design. A brief course in 3D CAD design will be given. General Competence: Develop insight and respect as a professional and be able to reflect critically over one's own and other's work. Develop and understanding for the role of an architect with cross-disciplinary interests. Take initiative and resonsponsibility for one's own learning and professional development.

Learning methods and activities

Basic learning from hands-on investigation of existing buildings as a primary source. Develop projects on the basis of field investigation, lectures and discussions. Relevant choices of change based on careful attention to resource use and the distinctiveness of the building. Obligatory excursions will be free of cost for all students. Students who participate in optional excursions must expect to pay a small share of the expenses. For students who do not participate in optional excursions, an alternative will be offered.

The student will be given several tasks of documentation and design according to the course plan. These tasks must be completed in order to pass the course.

The final exam consists of a design project which will be reviewed and discussed in class.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Architecture (MAAR)

Required previous knowledge

AAR4300 Arkitektur 1, AAR4415 Arkitektur 2 and AAR4416 Arkitektur 3, or equivalent.
