What
A four day scientific meeting on thermoacoustic oscillations in gas turbines, rocket engines, boilers, and heating systems will be hosted by NTNU in Trondheim in September 2025. This symposium will be hosted by Professors James Dawson, Jonas Moeck, and Nicholas Worth from NTNU and Mirko Bothien from, ZHAW and NTNU.
REGISTRATION IS OPEN
More about the conference
Although understanding and avoiding of thermoacoustic instabilities is of outstanding relevance equally in the design of gas turbine combustors as well as rocket engines, two almost separate research networks have evolved around these two industries. Both have developed their respective research strategies and methodologies. The two research branches successfully met in 2016 and 2021 at the first two Symposia on Thermoacoustics in Combustion (SoTiC) hosted by TUM. A successful third SoTiC meeting was held in Zurich in 2023 and now the fourth meeting will be held in Trondheim in 2025.
The purpose of the conference is to promote discussion and sharing of practical experiences, experimental and analytical methods, physical interpretations, and future topics important to the field of combustion dynamics. As in previous symposia, invited speakers from both industry and research groups will present their specific views on key topics of current thermoacoustic research. We welcome the submission of papers covering a range of topics including:
- Physical Mechanisms
- Nonlinear Phenomena
- Pressure and Fuel Effects
- Generation, Propagation and Damping of Perturbations
- Dynamics of Spray and Autoignition Flames
- Flame Response
- Transverse Modes
- Tools Development
- Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Data Driven Methods
- Analysis and Control of Instabilities
- Stability Analysis
- Uncertainty Quantification
- Annular and Can-Annular Systems
The proceedings of the symposium will be made available to all registrants in electronic form.
All SoTiC 2025 registrants will have the opportunity of recommending two best papers on the basis of outstanding writing quality, a high degree of originality, and an unusual contribution to science and engineering. Both awards will be endowed with 500€ each. The Best Fundamental Paper Award recognizes the publication with the greatest contribution to fundamental understanding in the field of thermoacoustics, and the Best Technical Paper Award recognizes the publication with the greatest technical relevance of all papers submitted to SoTiC 2025.
Selected papers presented at the symposium will be published in a special issue of the International Journal of Spray and Combustion Dynamics after peer review.
