Movement solutions, physiology and classification in paralympic sports
SenTIF's main purpose in the research on Paralympic sports is to contribute with knowledge that increases understanding of work requirements and training work in prioritized sports, so that Norwegian athletes can achieve higher training quality and optimize their competition preparation and implementation. In the past, this project has had a focus on Sledge hockey and Para cross-country sit-skiing. Increased resources have now contributed to an expanded focus that now includes Para swimming and Para rowing. The intensity zones for sitting Paralympic athletes have been examined and validated, and various testing concepts have been developed. Furthermore, we have carried out competition analyses that develop an understanding of the work requirement in the sport. In cooperation with the department for endurance at Olympiatoppen and the Centre for Sport Facilities and Technology (SIAT), analyses of training and equipment adaptation for national team athletes in various sports have been started. This provides useful knowledge about the ways training and adaptation of equipment is currently done and creates good discussions about areas for further development. We are continuously working to get this knowledge implemented by athletes, coaches, and professionals working with the Paralympic athletes.
Furthermore, we have received funding through an NTNU discovery pre-project application and NTNU innovation grant and started the work on developing a valid algorithm that measures physical activity and energy consumption in trained and untrained wheelchair users. In addition, and based on the work done in recent years, we have begun with the implementation of research-based knowledge in the development steps of the eleven priority Paralympic sports (Para cross-country skiing, Para biathlon, Para swimming, Para rowing, Para table tennis, Para alpine skiing, Para snowboarding, Para ice hockey, Para athletics, Para shooting and Para cycling) and in education literature at NTNU.
Paralympic research at SenTIF is being coordinated by researcher Julia Kathrin Baumgart. David McGhie and Cecilia Severin are employed as senior researchers, Camilla Høivik Carlsen as a PhD candidate, and Eline Blaauw as research assistant. The increased number of positions is based on increased funding through the VI foundation, as well as priorities of KUD and internal funds. Furthermore, several colleagues at SenTIF and master students from NTNU and various universities abroad contribute to the Para research projects. We are constantly working to develop our national and international network to reinforce the focus on this area nationally. There is close and good dialogue with the head of Paralympic sports at Olympiatoppen, as well as head of endurance. This is the foundation for implementing knowledge in the Norwegian national teams.
