Research activity

Biophysics is an interdisciplinary branch of science, where methods and theories from physics are applied to study biological systems. It spans all levels of biological organization from the molecular scale to whole organisms and ecosystems.

We combine experimental research with simulations and mathematical modelling. Biological systems are studied on the length scale from single molecules, to bacteria and cells, and to tissue and whole organisms, employing a variety of imaging techniques and experimental methods.

The instrumentation and clean room available at NTNU NanoLab is among the important infrastructures for our research.

Biological Polymers and Bionanotechnology

Bionanotechnology is a branch of nanotechnology which uses biological starting materials, utilises biological design or fabrication principles or is applied in medicine or biotechnology

Biophotonics and Spectroscopy

We are developing and using advanced spectroscopy and optically nonlinear properties of molecular systems to study primarily biosystems, biosensors and organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterials.

Medical Physics and Technology

The overall aim of our research is to develop and improve diagnostic tools and to improve therapy. The research is primarily focused on cancer, arthrosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Improving diagnosis is done by developing new applications and methods, and characterizing new parameters based on molecular and medical imaging.
