From Cartesian Mind-Body Dualism to Physical AI

We will revolutionize AI and robotics by developing a universal science of Embodied AI that deeply integrates cognition with physical interaction, enabling robots that can autonomously operate in complex, extreme, and dynamic environments. From deep-sea energy installations and arctic infrastructure to sustainable agriculture and coastal monitoring.

By combining fundamental research with practical innovation, we will strengthen Norway’s and Europe’s competitiveness, open new markets, and boost productivity and safety across key industries including:

  • maritime operations
  • oil and gas applications
  • aquaculture
  • renewable energy

At the same time, the centre will proactively address ethical, social, and environmental considerations, ensuring that advanced robots support rather than replace human labor, complementing workforce needs and improving resilience in remote and rural regions.

With robust partnerships, a focus on innovation, and a commitment to open science and public trust, we will lay the groundwork for lasting societal, economic, and environmental benefits, supporting national sovereignty and contributing into solving major challenges aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals positioning Norway as a global leader in next-generation embodied AI.

Vision

Vision

The Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI (NCEI) strives to develop a Universal Science of Embodied AI for diverse morphologies and on its basis enable the computational co-design of a robot's autonomy (i.e., the "brain") and morphology (i.e., the "body").
