About nanotechnology

About nanotechnology

'Nano' means 'billionth' and comes from the Greek word nanos, which means 'dwarf'. One nanometre equals one billionth meter, or about 10 times the diameter of an atom. Nanotechnology involves studying and manipulating different materials at the atomic level. This provides the opportunity to design novel materials with unique properties.

Broad interdisciplinary expertise within physics, chemistry and biology are combined at the atomic level in an advanced interfaculty engineering programme in Nanotechnology. The programme offers specially developed courses with nanotechnology being the prime focus. From the first semester, your studies will be inspired by emerging concepts and opportunities for nanomaterials and nanocomponents.

The first three years will give you a good grounding in the chemistry, physics and mathematics that is relevant to the subject. You will be introduced to nanoscale systems, the manipulation of atoms and molecules and the use of nanotools. Ethical and environmental issues relating to nanotechnology are integrated into the programme.

Course Objectives

The programme is supported on a solid foundation of courses within physics, chemistry and mathematics. These are combined with courses in electronics and materials science that are oriented towards technology to give a good grounding for further studies in nanotechnology. The programme provides the theoretical basis and knowledge of experimental methods and technological applications of nanotechnology. The social implications of nanotechnology pertaining to ethical and environmental issues are also addressed. The first two years are common for all students in the programme. In the last three years, students choose their main profile from key areas relating to research, business and industry.

You can select one of the following main profiles:

  • Bionanotechnology
  • Nanotechnology for materials, energy and the environment
  • Nanoelectronics
