This programme is taught in Norwegian. For more detailed information about this programme, please see our Norwegian programme pages.

The Master of Science in Economics provides comprehensive training in economic approaches, theories, topics and methods.

Economics

This degree qualifies for work with economic analyses within business and public administration. It also qualifies for further studies at doctoral level.

You will learn how to conduct scientific investigation and research work. In addition to further studies in microeconomics, macroeconomics and method, the programme consists of elective courses where the objective is to provide the students with specialization within certain fields of the discipline. The courses can to a great extent be chosen according to individual interests and career plans. Examples of elective courses are:

  • political economics
  • labour market economics
  • education and labour market
  • environment and resource economics
  • international trade

It would be an advantage to choose at least one course with relevance for the master's thesis, which is the final programme examination.

Programme profile

This programme is suited for socially engaged students with analytical skills. The programme provides a deep understanding of complicated mechanisms in economics, and a good foundation for understanding the interaction between economics and politics. In the Master's programme you must deal with theoretical models and empirical analyses that require profound basic knowledge in mathematics and statistics.

Modern economics is characterized by complexity and rapid changes. Decision-makers in both the private and public sector demand to an ever higher degree the information that renders it possible to make the right decisions. Economists hold theoretical and methodological knowledge which equips them to function as premise providers in such situations.

Programme structure

The Master of Science in Economics is a two-year long programme with both elective and compulsory courses and a master's thesis (30 ECTS). For further information about the courses, please consult the course descriptions. Please note that the language of instruction is mostly Norwegian.
