Proposal development

Application

  • Get approval from your department leader to apply for funding.
  • Register your proposal as early as possible here.
  • Ask your peers for help with your project idea and review of your proposal draft.
  • The Grants Office at the MH-faculty offers several services:
    • Reading days to see successful RCN proposals.
    • Courses in effective grant writing and CV building for both junior and senior researchers.
    • Subject to capacity, you can have your proposal reviewed by the Grants Office. If you’d like the Grants Office to review your proposal, please follow the expression of interest procedure.
  • To qualify for PES funding with an ERC or coordinated Horizon Europe proposal, you must have support from your head of department and submit an expression of interest (EOI) along with a PES application to the Grants office at least 6 months before the application deadline.
  • More information about the EOI procedure is available here.
  • Contact the grants office if you have any questions.

There are no administrative costs related to hosting a project at MH. However there are certain costs that you should be aware of when calculating your budget.

Operating funds:

  • MH allocates fixed operating funds (driftsmidler) to support individuals in academic positions within research projects. These funds should be included in your project budget. The allocations are as follows:
    • PhD – 90k per year for 3 years, 270k in total
    • Postdoc – 110k per year for 3 years, 330k in total
    • Researcher – 20k per year
  • Check with your project economist whether these funds will be covered by NTNU, or if they will need to be financed by the project.

Lab Costs:

  • Some departments may also have costs associated with lab work, such as location rental fees. These should be factored into your project budget. Note that the amount funded depends on the grant that you are applying to. Some funders have restrictions on the types of acceptible pricing structures, for example semester-based pricing versus hourly, daily, weekly-based pricing.
  • Consult with your project economist to check whether these costs apply to your department.

Yes, of course!

What you can charge to your project ultimately depends on the funding scheme so make sure to check the specifics of the scheme you are applying to. If you have any questions about budget categories and what can be funded, your project economist is there to assist you.

Yes! RRS-positions (formerly RSO) are available for NFR and Horizon Europe projects over 6 million NOK.

MH-faculty awards a 3-year PhD position as own financing to awarded NFR and HEU projects where MH-faculty is allocated at least 6 million NOK of the externally financed budget.

The faculty covers salary, social costs and operating costs in compliance with the current routines for RRS positions at the faculty.

Requirements to qualify:

1.  You must notify the faculty that you are applying no later than 2 weeks before the application deadline/scheduled date of proposal submission (open-ended).

The following information is required:

  • The name of the call for proposals
  • The project title
  • The name and department of the project leader
  • The total budget for the project
  • MH-faculty’s share of the externally financed budge.
  • If the MH-faculty is a partner, please include the name and organization of the project manager.

2.   The proposal must be supported by the head of department. An email from the head of department confirming their support for the proposal is sufficient.

Please submit this information, including documentation of support from the head of your department by email to laila.berg@ntnu.no .

The MH-faculty reserves its right to use the "first come, first served" principle for prioritization if the annual RRS-resources earmarked for this purpose are exceeded.
