Acute effect of endurance exercise on breast milk composition

Acute effect of endurance exercise on breast milk composition

The aim of this study is to investigate whether endurance exercise with moderate or high intensity can modify the breast milk composition in women who are overweight or obese.

We recruit participants who are ~6 weeks postpartum, and it is great if potential participants contact us even earlier. All participants need to come to our laboratories at St. Olavs Hospital four times:

  1. On the first visit, we measure your fitness (maximal oxygen uptake), estimate your body composition, and measure your blood pressure. You will receive an electric breast milk pump and we go through what will happen further in the study.
  2. On the next three visits, you will either exercise with moderate intensity, exercise with high intensity, or not exercise (sit and rest in the lab). The order of these three conditions will be random and they will be about 1 week apart.

The total study period is around 4 weeks.

Criteria for participation

  • Aged 18 years or more
  • Body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or more before pregnancy, and/or BMI of 28 kg/m2 or more after delivery
  • Exclusively breastfeeding
  • Living in the Trondheim area (with the possibility to come in for the visits at St. Olavs Hospital)
  • Understands Norwegian (written and orally)

In addition to the visits and testing, we will ask you to complete some questionnaires (including questions on medications, smoking habits, and the baby’s birth weight).

The project is undertaken at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, NTNU, in collaboration with the Women’s Clinic at St. Olavs Hospital, and is approved by the Regional Committee for Medical and Health Research (REK). The project is a part of the ExMilk project, which is funded by the European Research Council and NTNU.
