F.R.I.D.A.S. - Fundamental rights in daily actions of social workers

F.R.I.D.A.S. is an Erasmus+ project, co-founded by the EU. F.R.I.D.A.S. recognise social work as a profession rooted in human rights principles. The aim is to develop and implement a human rights-based curriculum specifically designed to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of future social workers. The acronym of the project stands for Fundamental rights in daily actions of social workers.

Background and objectives

The project starts from the assumption that human rights are foundational to social work; social work is a human rights profession. At the international level there is no doubt there is a consensus that human rights are important and relevant to social work.  At the same time, the academic debate about human rights remains at the theoretical level with little articulation of what it means in practice for professionals in a European context to claim that their work is based on human rights. The partnership has recognized the urgency to improve future social workers’ competences in human rights and human rights-based practices to support people in vulnerable situations, promoting social justice and an inclusive culture where “none is left behind”.
 F.R.I.D.A.S. project aims at:

  • promoting an unbiased community in the field of the Higher Education, especially in social work departments, characterized by a culture capable of counteracting prejudices, promoting anti-oppressive practices and a culture of diversity,
  • empowering students in order not to be influenced by prejudice in their choices and their future work as social workers, which will make them deal with violations on human rights.

To reach the above-mentioned objectives, FRIDAS intends to realise the following activities:

  • a collection of cases where professional social workers present situations of Human Rights violations, discrimination, and vulnerability,
  • competence framework on human rights for social work students,
  • educational modules of a training course for students on human rights,
  • implementation of a virtual community for students and practitioners to share practices and advocate for HR.

All materials will be published on F.R.I.D.A.S. website.
