A pedagogic course for teaching faculty for state-of-the-art skills and competence 


WP2 Fundamentals of Teaching and Learning in Physiotherapy Education

The first part of the introductory course; Fundamentals of Teaching and Learning in Physiotherapy Education, was successfully presented to 13 physiotherapy lecturers. It was conducted through distance learning, a combination of self-learning, synchronous and asynchronous sessions. The course was divided into four units,

  • Unit 1 Foundations of learning: The unit focused on 3 main issues: 1) How do we learn, 2) Domains of learning and 3) How theory can inform practice 
  • Unit 2 Pedagogical approaches: The overall objective was to develop participants’ insight into1) Global practices and trends in physiotherapy education, 2) Innovative approaches to Learning (Peer learning, case- or problem-based learning), 3) Knowledge development, intra-,cross disciplinary work, 4) Integrating the pedagogical theories with clinical practice and their application to the teaching and learning of disciplines within the profession.
  • Unit 3 Curriculum – design, mapping and alignment: This unit considered understanding of the curriculum as a whole through 1) introduction to curriculum and defining terms, 2) exploring curriculum models and constructive alignment, 3) doing a practical exercise of curriculum mapping and finally 4) Curriculum renewal tips.
  • Unit 4 Essentials of Assessment: the participants explored assessment practices in undergraduate physiotherapy through 1) Introduction to assessment, 2) Constructive alignment applied to assessment, 3) Assessment strategies (question and assessment types), 4) Self-regulated learning and giving feedback using rubrics and 5) Assessment planning with a showcase from the Wits Physiotherapy department.

The second part is ongoing, where the participants are submitting their assignments from each unit, as a part of the course portfolio, deadline end of October. The facilitators are now giving individual feedback to the participants, and a final deadline for submission will be identified.

The third part will the contain of a final assessment and evaluation of the course.

Based upon the outcomes of these initiatives, a potential follow up, a forth part, will be further discussed.
