Bone and endocrinology_txt

The Bone and endocrinology research group studies the effect of different substances on bone mineral density and bone metabolism.

The studies include adipokines (leptin, resistance and adiponectin) and several drugs that are in clinical use. Some of the drugs we have studied are antidepressants (SSRI), glitazones and proton pump inhibitors.

We are looking at the effects of different kinds of training on the skeleton and muscle. We are now planning to do studies on the skeleton in patients with extreme obesity. These patients will also be followed with measurement of bone mineral density and bone markers after by-pass surgery.

In our research we apply animal models (rat and mice) and bone cells. We are also performing studies in humans. Our research may contribute to increased understanding of the regulation of bone metabolism. Additionally, it may reveal unknown adverse effects of drugs that are in clinical use. Finally, our research may promote development of new options in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
