Cyber-Physical Systems

Our research group has three strategic research areas:

Research activity

The Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory (CPS Lab) is a research group founded autumn 2014. It is a dynamic hub of research, innovation, and educational development activities, integrating PhD candidates and postdocs with staff and students associated with the BSc in Automation and Intelligent Systems and MSc in Mechatronics and Automation study programmes.

About

The research group has been awarded funding for a number of PhD and postdoc projects over the years, materialising in the following CPS Lab divisions:

  • Autonomous ships (2018)
  • Biomechatronics (2020)
  • Machine vision (2024)

Autonomous ships

The research group currently includes four PhD candidates. We actively participate in RCN-funded projects on autonomous surface vessels, including SFI Autoship, SAFEMATE, Autodrone, and MIDAS, with parthers from the maritime industry, maritime authorities, and research institutions.

Biomechatronics

The research group currently includes four PhD candidates. We collaborate with Ålesund Biomechanics Lab at the Ålesund hospital, NTNU TrollLabs, and the NTNU Artificial Pancreas Trondheim (APT) research group on topics such as biomechatronics, robotics, computer haptic-assisted orthopedic surgery (CHAOS), and diabetes technology.

Machine vision

Since 2024, the research group includes the IIR department's first industrial PhD candidate. We collaborate with the innovative maritime technology company Seaonics AS on the topic of machine vision and AI for advanced maritime operations.
