High Voltage Technology – HVT

Research activity

The main research activities of the group are related to the design, modeling and operation of electric power components. With close working links with industry, research into better insulation materials, both for ac and dc, is being conducted. There is ongoing research and development of new technology and expertise in the following fields.

Insulation Materials

  • High voltage insulation technology
  • Subsea connector technology
  • Switchgear technology
  • HVDC cables

Analysis of Stresses

  • Component modelling: transformers, cables, machines, converters, circuit breakers
  • Computer simulation: analysis of disturbances, harmonics, transients, multi-physics
  • Insulation coordination
  • Simulation tool developments (ATPDraw)

Component Designs

  • Power and umbilical cables
  • Power transformers
  • Circuit breakers and switchgear

Smartgrid

  • Relay protection and substation automation
  • Current interruption, AC/DC
  • Diagnostic testing and condition assessment
  • Measurement techniques
