Sustainability

Sustainability

We are developing at – it seems – an increasing pace. The number of people on Earth is rapidly growing. Climate change is accelerating. To achieve sustainability, we need research, education, and innovation, and we need to do things better and faster to catch up. Some of these things we are working on at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. We wish to contribute (make our contribution) to knowledge for a better world. To a great extent, our contribution comes from digitalisation and electrification. A common claim on our part is that the future is renewable, electric, smart and digital.

NTNU takes part in a mission to electrify aviation

Our goal is to create clean aviation, says vice dean for sustainability and innovation Ole-Morten Midtgård. Researchers at the IE Faculty will take part in developing the world’s first 90 seat regional zero emission aircraft.

NTNU has made an agreement with the Jet Zero Consortium, where universities, the aviation industry and the supplier industry will work together to promote sustainable aviation. This collaboration means that NTNU gains access to several strategically important research programmes.

Clean Aviation

Clean Aviation

Clean aviation is a strategic research area at the iE faculty. The goal of Clean Aviation is net-zero climate emissions for all flights by 2050.

Clean Aviation now have their own web site where you can learn about their research and the different solutions for net-zero emissions.

Research

Research

There are several promising projects at the faculty supporting sustainability. Some of it is shown here. For more, see the departments.

At Campus Ålesund, research is being done on autonomous ships. The same is the case for SFI Autoship on Campus Gløshaugen. These vessels can contribute to simplifying the transport sector and move heavy transport from shore.

At the Department of Electric Power Engineering, an EU supported research project is looking into new charging systems for electrical vehicles.

Education

Education

We are working on integrating sustainability in all our programmes of study. Please look at an overview of our study programmes to find out more about the programme you are interested in.

You can also read more about the Technology Studies of the Future (FTS) and sustainable competence (PDF in Norwegian).

Innovation

Innovation

The IE Faculty focuses on electric aviation and has joined a consortium that will develop zero emission aircrafts.

The IT industry accounts for much of the Earth's energy consumption. We will work for a more environmentally friendly industry through sustainable software development and software that is sustainable.
