Graphic design
Before starting the submission of graphic assignments, it is important to be aware of the following points:
File types It is important to use the right file types for different purposes. Here are some recommended file types for different graphic elements:
- Images: Use raster graphics file formats such as JPEG or PNG for photographs and complex images.
- Vector graphics: Use file formats such as AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS or SVG for graphic elements that need scaling without loss of quality.
Resolution
For images and graphic elements to be displayed on screen, a resolution of 72 dpi is usually sufficient. For printing, the resolution should be higher, usually 300 dpi, to ensure sharpness and detail.
Time clarification
Together we prepare a realistic timetable based on the project's complexity, scope and available resources. Here we consider how much time is needed for different phases of the design process, including mapping, concept development, production and any revisions. The number of design hours depends on capacity and prioritization.
Correction
You will receive a pdf file as proofreading. You can add comments and markups directly to the PDF file to indicate changes or suggested adjustments.
- Briefing: The first step will be an initial meeting with you to gain an understanding of your needs and wishes for the assignment. This will include a review of the target audience, the message to be conveyed, visual style and tone-of-voice. We follow NTNU's graphic profile.
- Concept development: Based on the briefing, our designers will develop a concept for the assignment. This will involve creating design elements, graphics and images that fit in with the visual style and tone-of-voice that is desired.
- Layout and design: Once the concept has been approved, our designers will create a layout for the assignment. There will also be presentation meetings, revision meetings and any follow-up meetings.
Plain language is important to ensure effective communication between sender and receiver. When texts and messages are written in a way that is easy to understand, the chance that the recipient will interpret the message correctly and take the necessary actions increases. By using clear language, you can also avoid misunderstandings, errors and misleading information. This is particularly important when it comes to public communication, where it is important that all citizens can understand and participate equally. Plain language also helps to strengthen trust between sender and receiver, as it shows respect for the receiver's time and ability to understand.
When submitting a file for printing, it is important to follow certain guidelines to ensure that the result is as expected.
- Choose the right file format: The most common format for printed matter is PDF, as it reliably preserves formatting, colors and fonts.
- Be sure to create a print-ready PDF file. Ensure the correct resolution: To ensure that the printout is sharp and detailed, the images in the file must have sufficient resolution. Generally speaking, images should be 300 dpi (dots per inch) in print quality. Avoid using low-resolution images that may appear pixelated when printed.
- Crop and Bleed: If your design contains images or colors that should extend all the way to the edge of the paper (without a white margin), add a bleed. Bleed is an extra margin around the design which ensures that there are no white edges after cutting. Make sure the bleed area is properly defined (3 mm).
- Include font files: If you use specific fonts in your design that are not standard, you must include the font files in your delivery. This ensures that we have access to the exact fonts you used and that the text appears correctly in the printout.
- Quality control: Before sending the file, you should always perform a careful quality control. Check for any errors, typos, unwanted lines. Also check that all elements in the design are correctly positioned and formatting is consistent.
NTNU's graphic profile is designed in a clean and modernist style. NTNU is a modern, forward-looking university and this must be reflected in all visual communication and design from NTNU.
The idiom is characterized by:
- Light and air (not overlaid/tightly packed surfaces)
- Asymmetrical balance (except when we want a more "classic" expression)
- Design for universal design and good readability
- Design that supports the university's values
