Background

The gas reserves offshore Tanzania are extensive, and the exploitation of the reserves can have a large economic impact on the country. The development of the deep sea gas fields, and the subsequent processing and utilization of the gas, will also require availability of a local work force. This gives a challenge for the educational institutions; to develop programs and staff to serve the educational needs in the area of oil and gas technology.

Activities and Results

Objectives

The objective has been to establish a master program in Oil and Gas Technology at University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM).

Activities and Results

The establishment of new master program at UDSM is a rather rigorous process, involving stakeholder reviews and evaluation and acceptance at several levels from Department, School, VC office, the University Senate and the Tanzania Education Authority. The path towards an operational master program has been:

  • Joint curriculum development, based on the course catalogues at both NTNU and UDSM
  • Accreditation
  • Identification of pairs of lecturers from NTNU and UDSM for the courses
  • Three rounds of guest lecturers from NTNU in selected courses. These are concentrated courses with both NTNU and UDSM lecturers
  • A NORPART mobility project has also been useful in supporting NTNU visits for UDSM studnets during their master thesis work, co-supervised by NTNU staff.
  • Continuation with UDSM lecturers after the project period, supported by video recordings of earlier lectures.

The project "Master Program in Oil and Gas Technology" is part of the NORAD Energy and Petroleum Program (2016-2020).
