Publications

Thermostatistics of thermophilic motion.

A thermodynamic framework based on a Hamiltonian of mean force can describe the somewhat counterintuitive and elusive phenomenon of negative thermophoresis (thermophilic motion) in an unusually elegant and straightforward fashion.

Statistical Mechanics at Strong Coupling: A Bridge between Landsberg's Energy Levels and Hill's Nanothermodynamics.

Landsberg's framework of "temperature-dependent energy levels" and the resulting temperature-dependent Hamiltonian of mean force provide a thermostatistical foundation for Terrell L. Hill's celebrated nanothermodynamics.

Gibbs thermodynamics and surface properties at the nanoscale.

Gibbs’s thermodynamic theory approximates systems as infinitely large phases separated by infinitely thin surfaces. The range of validity of this framework comes naturally under scrutiny as we become ever more interested in the properties of nanosystems.
