About

Background

Rannveig Marie Færgestad joined SIMLab and SFI CASA in Autumn 2021 as a PhD Candidate. Prior to this she studied Mechanical Engineering with a specialisation in applied mechanics at NTNU. In the spring of 2021 she wrote her MSc thesis titled “Modelling and simulation of hypervelocity impact against debris shields for spacecraft protection”, which was awarded the NIFRO award for best space-related masters thesis. 

Research

The PhD project, titled “Modelling and simulation of hypervelocity impact against debris shields for spacecraft protection”, aims to contribute with new knowledge on modelling approaches for hypervelocity impact on spacecraft structures, which can improve the protection of spacecraft and contribute to a sustainable future in low Earth orbit. 

Through the project, numerical and experimental tools will be applied to study the response to HVI for different materials and shielding structures. Experimental studies are expensive, and numerical models are important tools to save cost and reduce the number of necessary experimental tests.
