As a PhD candidate in Artistic research, Knudsen's project "Expanding horizons" focuses on the intersections of improvisation and western classical music from the 20th century. The objective is to contribute with knowledge on how musicians can employ this repertoire in musical improvisation and how this encounter can contribute to the expansion of their musical vocabulary. Through mutual creation and exploration of musical arrangements, the project sets out to answer to following the research questions: 
How can one, based on this repertoire, create departure points that are conducive to improvisational creativity?
How do the participating improvisers negotiate and navigate the musical language of these works?
What is the perceived benefits and risks of these explorations?
