About
Numerical simulations and measured traffic loads in fatigue life estimation of existing railway bridges
The Norwegian railway system includes more than 2300 bridges. About 40% of all bridges are steel bridges, and they have material fatigue as a primary damage mechanism. Fatigue is a damage mechanism characterized by the initiation and propagation of the crack under cyclic loading of the material.
Bridge maintenance is essentially important practice for every railway owner since failures in the exploitation of such structures lead to severe catastrophes. Information gathered at measurement stations can be used to predict а residual life of railway bridges. The classical approach to calculating a remaining fatigue life of a railway bridge is to establish a load model based on the typical trains for a site and then correct prediction by the load measurements at the site.
