Leonie Richarz
About
I am a PhD student in FACET since November 2021, working in the subgroup Functional Topological Systems.
Main Supervisor: Professor Dennis Gerhard Meier
Co-supervisor: Professor Antonius T.J. van Helvoort
My research is focussed on the properties of ferroelectric domain walls, using advance microscopy techniques such as, e.g., AFM and SEM/FIB for characterisation.
Research
My PhD is part of the ERC ATRONICS project, in which we focus on the properties of ferroelectric domain walls in ErMnO3 and how they could be used to design future nanoscale electronics. My work is particularly dedicated to investigating the influence of environmental conditions on the physical domain wall properties. We believe that these investigations will open conceptually new possibilities for the development of domain-wall-based sensor technology.
To investigate these properties, different microscopy techniques are applied. A focus is layed on advanced AFM techniques, but we also use FIB/SEM and other techniques if possible.
Background:
Before starting at NTNU, I did my bachelor’s and master’s degree in physics at the University of Bonn in Germany. I received my master’s degree in summer 2021. Parts of my studies were also carried out at NTNU, where I spend half a year as an exchange student. Both my bachelor’s and master’s thesis were focusing on detector development for particle physics.
