About
Kaushik Naresh Kumar was born in June 1993 in Chennai, India. In 2015, he obtained the B.Tech. degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from SASTRA University (Thanjavur, India). Between 2015-2017, he worked as a Traction Substation Design Engineer at Larsen & Toubro Construction Ltd.'s Railways Design Center (Faridabad, India). In 2020, he received the M.Sc. degree in Power Engineering from Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Darmstadt, Germany). During his Master studies he did a research internship and a Master's thesis project at the Power Electronics Research Department of Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH (Regensburg, Germany), both focusing on Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC).
Since February 2021, he is a PhD Candidate at the Power Electronic Systems and Components (PESC) research group in NTNU (Trondheim, Norway). Associate Professor Dimosthenis Peftitsis will supervise his PhD research, which will focus on designing a multi-port and reconfigurable isolated DC-DC converter for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure.
His current research interests include SiC-based Power Converter Design and High Efficiency Electric Vehicle Charging.
Research
The main objective of my PhD work is to deliver a reconfigurable and multi-port isolated DC/DC converter employing SiC metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and exhibiting an efficiency higher than 97% at nominal power.
Apart from that the following secondary objectives shall be accomplished:
1. To identify the fundamental design of an isolated DC/DC converter topology that enables multiple configurations in terms of input and output stages.
2. To validate theoretically and experimentally various configurations of the isolated DC/DC converters for supplying charging power in the range of 10 kW.
3. To identify design and operating electrical and thermal parameters in terms of voltage, current and temperature.
4. To design and experimentally test the fundamental building circuit (e.g., full-bridge circuit) with SiC MOSFETs along with the necessary auxiliary sub-circuits of the isolated DC/DC converter.
5. To deliver design and operating guidelines for integration of the isolated DC/DC converters with the EV charging infrastructure.

Highlights of the work titled, "Performance Evaluation of SiC-based Isolated Bidirectional DC/DC Converters for Electric Vehicle Charging":
Objective: Performance evaluation of six 10 kW DC/DC isolated and bidirectional dual active bridge topologies, supplied by +750/0/-750V three-wire DC bus.
Evaluation criteria: Efficiency, loss distribution, volt-ampere semiconductors ratings and normalized cost of SiC MOSFETs.
Evaluation methods: 1. Theoretical evaluation, 2. Electro-thermal simulations using PLECS software, and 3. Experimental validation of 5 kW prototypes of four of the considered topologies.
Application: Electric Vehicle charging.
