Kasper Emil Thorvaldsen
About
I work at NTNU, Department of Electric Energy (NTNU IEL) as an Adjunct Associate Professor (20%), within the topic "The transition to a sustainable energy system". Primarily I am involved in teaching and education within the study program Energy and Environment (MTENERG), but I will also be involved in different master thesis topics for the 5th year students at the study program. My main work is as a research scientist at SINTEF Energi, Energisystemer.
I consider myself to be an outgoing, easy to talk to and positive person. If you have some questions regarding courses or master topics, please feel free to reach out to me :)

Competence
Within research, I primarily work on optimization and programming of the energy system, to look into the future solutions to better make use of flexibility, primarily electrical flexibility. My core competence is considered to be:
- Python Programming
- Optimization techniques within the energy system
- Analytical methods to investigate flexibility, and the value of flexibility
- Long-term operational planning of the energy system and flexible resources
- Stokastic dynamic programming (SDP)
Education
- Msc, Energy and Environment at NTNU: 2013-2018
- I specialized within the techno-economic aspect of the energy system, and wrote a master thesis about the role of battery storage towards energy and reserve capacity markets. Using SDP, I looked at the long-term strategy of operating the battery.
- PhD NTNU IEL: 2018-2022
- I have a PhD within long-term oprational planning of the energy system within buildings. The work looked into how we can incorporate long-term price signals and represent them for short-term operational models. This will enable more global and optimal use of the flexible resources available, considering both the here-and-now value and the long-term future value of these resources.
