Bordered penal populism: When populism and Scandinavian exceptionalism meet
This article examines discourses of penality in Norway following the entry into government of the Progress Party. In a context where the penal welfare consensus remains relatively strong, it is easier to ‘do populism’ by focusing on non-citizens.
Talking Good: Analysing Narratives of Desistance in Norway
This article explores the lived experience of desistance as narrated by Norwegian desisters. We analyse ‘small stories’ that either opened up or frustrated the co-creation of change, showing how desistance develops (or is stymied) at a micro level.
Probation practice, desistance and the penal field in Norway
This article analyses how probation caseworkers describe their practice. Caseworkers have a relational, contextualised understanding of probation clients and the challenges they face.

Should we be pining for the fjords? Probation, debt and desistance in Norway
An overview of my doctoral research which explored the ways in which people in Norway desist from offending, experience probation and cope with the consequences of what he terms ‘punishment debt’.
