John David Crosby
About
My doctoral research examines the concept of “dwelling” (or Wohnen, in Heidegger’s terminology) in New Norwegian (Nynorsk) literature in the nation-building era. As images of the home (heim in Nynorsk) abound in poetry and prose of the 19th century, both abstractly and concretely, my project looks to define what it means to dwell in the world of Nynorsk literature. By examining the same motifs found in German Romantic poetry and philosophy, images of home and dwelling illustrate the literary geography of a national project in Nynorsk literature. This project is a part of the NTNU and NFR research project ImagiNation. Mapping the Imagined Geographies of Norwegian Literature from 1814 to 1905.
My research is focused on 19th century and early 20th century Norwegian literature, with a focus on the works of Henrik Ibsen, Ivar Aasen and Henrik Rytter. In connection with these writers, I have developed a main interest in translation theory and reception studies.
Main academic interests include:
- Translation theory
- 20th century French philosophy
- Martin Heidegger
- Walter Benjamin
- Philosophical aesthetics
- Henrik Ibsen and Scandinavian modern drama
- The 19th century French novel
- German Romanticism
