Jan Morten Dyrstad
About
Jan Morten Dyrstad has his PhD in Economics from University of Bergen (1993) with the thesis Wage Formation in a Booming Economy and is affiliated with the Department of Economics, NTNU. He was Chair of the Economics Department 1996-98, and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management 1999-2013. His areas of research cover transport economics, wage formation, regional labour markets, sickness absence, and higher education. He has thought courses at all levels in econometrics, labour economics, microeconomic theory and public economics.

Dyrstad is Chairman of the Board of The Trondheim Foundation for Scientific Research (https://www.ntnu.edu/web/tfsr/tfsr), and member of the Board of The Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience (https://www.ntnu.edu/kavli).
He was Dean of The Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management from 1 January 1999 till 1 August 2013, and also Faculty Director from 1 April 2004 – 31 July 2005.
As Faculty leader he attached importance to performance management and long term strategic work, with clear goals and continuous follow-up. Extensive cooperation with others – both inside and outside NTNU – was an important part of this work; for example, cooperation regarding the establishment of national research schools in teacher education (NAFOL), education research, Researh School in Peace and Conflict, and Innovation (NORSI). Also, externally directed research units such as NTNU Social Research and NTNU Centre for Economic Research are both examples of strategic initiatives. Development of extensive continuing education programs, e.g., within management, and teacher education, is part of these strategic initiatives.
The Faculty’s performance within research and teaching nearly doubled in the period 2000-2012, and the development of professional and effective administration as a support network for research and teaching was an important part of the strategic work. This implied, among other factors, closer cooperation between administrative staff, researchers and teachers, and establishing indicators for quality of administrative performance.
Dyrstad has been member of numerous boards and committees within NTNU and beyond, among others, these: Chair of the committee for evaluation of research groups of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, University of Tromsø, 2013; member of the Advisory Board of NTNU’s Globalization Research Program and NTNU’s ICT Research Programme 2005-2013; member of the committee for evaluation of the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions, 2011-2012; chair of the Board of The Centre for the Biology of Memory (CoE), 2008-2013, member since 2003; chair of The National Faculty Meeting for the Social Sciences, 2007-2011; member of the Board of The Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Oslo, 2004-2009; chair of NTNU’s Committee for Continuing Education, 2002-2006; and chair of NTNU’s Committee for Income Distribution, 2002-2005. He was also a member of the Editorial Board, Norsk Økonomisk Tidsskrift og Sosialøkonomen 1995-1998.
