The Postdoc aims to develop optical techniques and technologies for hyperspectral remote sensing of the seabed from vehicles above and below water. The techniques mainly involve creating geometrically and radiometrically accurate maps. A reccuring theme in the postdoc is to use photogrammetry with ordinary cameras to build a 3D model of the terrain and to find the vehicle's movement in relation to the terrain. This lets us estimate where hyperspectral images originate on the seabed. Furthermore, such a geometric understanding of the image's formation enables us to model the light's scattering and absorption in the water column. By correcting for the effects of the water column, we can calculate the true reflectance of objects on the seabed. It is this reflectance that is often called the spectral fingerprint and it is used to identify different substrates. The postdoc is an interdisciplinary effort that combines techniques from remote sensing, radiative transfer theory and machine vision.
