The Material basis of Cooperation: How Scarcity Reduces Trusting Behaviour

In this study, we investigate whether food scarcity influences the level of trusting behaviour in rural Tanzania by leveraging quasi-experimental variation in food supply induced by the harvest.

Food scarcity decreases trust among Tanzanian farmers, reducing the resilience of affected communities

How food scarcity reduces trusting behaviour

Communities with higher levels of trust are better able to cope with crises. However, trust goes down in times of food scarcity when the need for cooperation is at its highest.
