PhD-project in assessment of existing road bridges
The demand for maintenance of existing bridges is increasing due to the amount of bridges that are reaching the end of their prescribed life time. Given satisfactory maintenance, the existing infrastructure can continue to serve the needs for transportation in a sustainable way.
Assessment of existing and sometimes deteriorated bridges involves uncertainties that require careful consideration when adopting structural and probabilistic models. Depending on the outcome of a reassessment, different actions may be taken, such as repairing or replacing the bridge or gathering more information. As rehabilitation of bridges is expensive, there is a need for effective methods and strategies to prioritise among possible investments.
In this PhD-project, a decision-making framework for road bridge maintenance will be developed. Basis is taken in the current Norwegian, European and international best practice, along with well-established theories on reliability based and risk based structural reassessment, Bayesian decision making and value of information, among others. Special focus will be given to data acquisition and analysis. Implementing efficient maintenance strategies ensure safe bridges using the least possible amount of resources by doing the right action at the right moment.
The PhD-project is part of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and NTNU research project SMARTer maintenance that comprises 9 PhD students on different topics on road maintenance.
