About

Foteini Oikonomou is an associate professor of physics. She is a theoretical astroparticle physicist working to understand how extreme astrophysical environments accelerate particles and radiation to energies exceeding 10^20 electronvolt (more than a million times higher than the energy of protons accelerated at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN). She has advanced the technique of modelling the multimessenger (radiation, cosmic-ray and neutrino) emission of active galactic nuclei which allows astrophysicists to determine the physical conditions in these objects. Her group studies the multimessenger emission of active galactic nuclei and various transient phenomena such as blazar flares and tidal disruption events.

Publications

The curious case of the maximum rigidity distribution of cosmic-ray accelerators

Although astrophysical accelerators of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) must be intrinsically diverse, our simulations of a diverse source population show that the UHECR data can only be fit if UHECR sources are intrinsically almost identical.
