About
I studied Solid State Physics at the Universiy of Konstanz, Germany, and received my Masters Degree based on research I did on the interdiffusion in binary polymer melts using a particle accelerator, which I did at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. In the same group (Prof.Jacob Klein) I also did my PhD research, studying the normal and lubrication forces between polymer bearing surfaces using the Surface Force Balance. After receiving my PhD degree in 1997, I became an EU-postdoctoral researcher at the University of Montpellier II and subsequently at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (beam line ID1) in Grenoble, France. There I researched the self-assembly of block copolymers and their flow behaviour in combined Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and rheology measurements. Continuing my love for Soft Matter Physics and in particular self-assembling systems, I became Assistent Professor at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands in 2000. There I started two research directions, one on the aging behaviour of clay suspentions, which we studied with Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Micro-Rheology, and the self-assembly of DNA-functionalized Colloids, which we studied with confocal microscopy. In 2008 I was offered a Seniour Lectureship and later Professorship at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambirdge, UK, where I continued both research lines and expanded my reaserch to also develop new micro-rheology and video-microscopy methods. In addition my group developed an approch that includes experiments, simulations and theory.
In 2021, I accepted a Professorship at the Physics Department of the NTNU and became PI at PoreLab, a Centre of Excellence. In the past 2 years I have built up an experimental Soft Matter lab to continue my DNA-research for diagnostic applications and to expand into research of environmentally systainable ground and binary flow in nano-porous media.
Every now and then I love to delve into the soft matter physics of foods such as Chinese century eggs and the spontaneous emulsification in the drink called 'Ouzo' or 'Pastis'. But we also studied the self-assembly of proteins.
